About the Artist
Michell Lie is a self taught Hong Kong born artist based in the United Kingdom. Rooted in the traditions of Chinese ink, her work explores the relationship between movement, emotion and contemporary abstraction. Her practice is guided by intuition, creating visual worlds where gesture, colour and rhythm come together with a quiet sense of balance.
Her paintings are defined by two contrasting forces. Bold ink strokes move with energy and flow, echoing the tension, movement and unpredictability of life. In contrast, fields of ultra fine ink dots are placed with meditative precision, adding depth, texture and a contemplative stillness. This combination of sweeping motion and delicate micro detail forms a language of contrast and harmony, where strength meets softness and clarity emerges from complexity.
Colour brings emotional lift to her work. Vivid hues introduce brightness and playfulness, balancing the intensity of the ink and creating compositions that feel both alive and grounding. Many viewers describe feeling soothed, energised or quietly rebalanced in the presence of her paintings. Michell hopes her work offers a moment to pause, breathe and reconnect with a sense of inner steadiness.
Compassion is central to her practice. A portion of every sale supports elderly communities, honouring the generations who came before us and extending care to those who may feel unseen or isolated. For Michell, art is a way to hold both beauty and purpose.
Her work reflects a world shaped by cultural heritage, emotional memory and intuitive expression. Through contrast and clarity, movement and stillness, she creates art that invites contemplation and connection.
It is art that feels good and does good.
